Happy Birthday Sun City 55 years young

Happy Birthday Sun City-55 years young!

Sun City comes of age gracefully!

Sun City, at 55 years old, is now old enough to live in the community of its namesake, as one person living there must be 55 or older.  This is also true for the children of the original homeowners.  They, too, are now old enough to live in Sun City, and many do.  As the oldest retirement community, Sun City is reinventing itself by embracing solar, updating the recreation centers, and adding clubs & activities sort after by retiring boomers of today. One example is pickleball, where the new courts are considered very desirable by the new generation of retirees.

When Del Webb first built Sun City in the 60’s, the experts said it would fail but instead, it flourished along with other Phoenix active adult retirement communities to follow, like Sun City West and Sun City Grand. In fact, active adult communities are more popular than ever, with new ones being developed recently, especially here in the Phoenix area.

Back then, the jingles to advertise Sun City were very different from today’s advertising. An article compliments of CBS News had an excellent comment from a viewer, silverandgold2.

“I was just a kid growing up in Phoenix when Sun City first opened. They ran a lot of commercials on television then, which were mostly in black and white. I still remember the sung jingle that they used with them. It said: “Wake up and live in Sun City, Mr. Senior Citizen, in the prime of your life, Mr. Senior Citizen and wife.”
